The Fed Funds Rate reported in the chart is based upon the Fed Funds Rate on the first day of each respective month. In 2020, the Federal Reserve’s Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) plans to hold its meetings on January 28-29, March 17-18, April 28-29, June 9-10, July 28-29, September 15-16, November 4-5, and December 15-16. The federal funds rate refers to the interest rate that banks charge other banks for lending them money from their reserve balances on an overnight basis. By law, banks must maintain a reserve equal to a certain percentage of their deposits in an account at a Federal Reserve bank. The federal funds rate is the interest rate at which depository institutions trade federal funds (balances held at Federal Reserve Banks) with each other overnight. When a depository institution has surplus balances in its reserve account, it lends to other banks in need of larger balances.
